Hard to Reach Groups – Focus on Muslim Women

This research was commissioned by the Food Standard Agency (FSA) and aimed at developing its knowledge base on Muslim women. A participatory approach was adopted, involving three focus groups in Bristol, London and Bolton. Findings revealed little knowledge and awareness of food labelling and participants felt that the information displayed was of little relevance to them. The following recommendations were made:

1.     Questionnaires and groups discussions are effective
        ways of engaging Muslim women

2.     Muslim women would welcome training in food
        preparation

3.     There is an urgent need for health awareness workshops
        targeting Muslim women

4.     FSA should develop an outreach strategy that focuses on
addressing access to and information needs of Muslim
        women

5.     Further research is needed, which would build on the
        findings of this research
